Serpentine Gallery Pavilion — Where Architecture Meets Nature

Every summer, a new architectural structure appears in Kensington Gardens, offering a fresh perspective on how we experience space. This is the Serpentine Pavilion, an annual project by Serpentine that invites internationally acclaimed architects to design a temporary pavilion in the heart of London.

First launched in 2000, the project has become an important part of London's architectural and cultural calendar, bringing contemporary architecture into a public garden where people can gather, pause and experience the space in their own way.

The 2026 Pavilion, a serpentine, is designed by LANZA atelier, the Mexico City-based practice led by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo. Drawing inspiration from the undulating brick walls found in British gardens, the design explores the relationship between structure, light and its natural surroundings.

What I find particularly interesting about the Pavilion is that it isn't simply something to look at from the outside. You can walk through it, notice how the light changes throughout the day, and see how the structure frames the trees and landscape around it.

It also makes you think about architecture in a slightly different way. Rather than being defined solely by its form or function, a building can shape how we move, pause and connect with the world around us.

Each year, a different architect brings a new perspective to the same setting. The Pavilion is temporary, but the ideas it introduces — about materials, space, nature and the way we inhabit our surroundings — are worth spending time with.

A quiet moment with architecture in the middle of London.
